Working in the Dark - Sturt Desert Pea
Thursday 5th & Friday 6th July
Working in the dark is all about working on dark fabric, something that many students avoid. Firstly it is difficult to trace the design onto the fabric as there are no satisfactory white transfer markers. Gary will look at the best solution to this problem. The second most common issue with working on dark fabric is that it is considered hard on the eyes, however this is dramatically improved when using Gary’s method of transferring the design. It is amazing the intensity of colour that is achieved when working on black, ideal for such subjects as “The Black Cockatoo” and the “Sturt Desert Pea”. Whilst students will choose one of the designs to work on in the workshop the instructions and patterns are included for both designs. Both designs are 23cm x 23cm and are stitched in 6 strands of six stranded cotton on a black poplin background. Mounting techniques in regards to this style of work will be discussed and demonstrated.
Skill level: All welcome
Kit cost: $57.75 and includes the threads and fabric for the Sturt Desert Pea, however does include the pattern and full instructions for both the “Black Cockatoo” and “Sturt Desert Pea”
