Blackwork with Tanja Berlin

We begin the project by transferring the design on to the 32 count fabric using tissue paper and tacking method. The student is then taught how to work the Blackwork embroidery from a selection of patterns within the tacked outline of the design.
The student will be using DMC embroidery floss and YLI silk floss or Perle cotton to embroider the design. The Blackwork stitches are worked in backstitch or double running stitch following a stitch pattern and counting the threads of the fabric. This Blackwork embroidery is not worked as a two-sided piece, instead we will concentrate on giving the embroidery perspective and dimension by changing the thickness of the thread and altering the density of the patterns.
The Blackwork Butterfly incorporate gold, silver and copper metal threads to outline areas of the embroidery.
The Blackwork Love Birds and the Blackwork Peacock incorporate Kreinik Metallic threads to bring out the iridescent quality of the feathers.
The student will go home with the understanding of how to transfer a design onto the fabric and how to work the Blackwork embroidery from a selection of patterns.
